SOCIAL: THE BENIFITS OF HOMEBREW AND EMULATION

People always are quick to assume that those engaged in these activities are wrong.  However, that is far from the truth.  What homebrew and emulation represents is the active engagement of a community of people that have the same interest in a particular product or platform.  Without these people, the early adopters, there would be no, "word of mouth."  These people talk to their colleagues who then speak to their colleagues and so on and so forth allowing the system to gain a support base.  These early adopters learn or train within the context of their chosen platform.  They train via hacking and exploiting the system so that perhaps in the future they too can have their own ecosystem within the field.  In fact, since the introduction of operating systems, people, namely those early adopters have worked to increase the capabilities of said platforms.  It is these people that have built software that allowed people to reduce the amount of effort that is put into work.  By reducing the amount of effort that is put in work, people could have a better quality of life.  For example, the introduction of AOL allowed instant messaging to make communication over the internet possible.  No longer did people have to write messages manually and send it over via snail mail.  Another example is when flash was introduced.  It became possible to encode video.  The likes of Youtube and Netflix emerged from this and has eliminated the need to go into the Blockbuster.

The point is, the hacking and exploitation of these systems allowed technology to progress and develop into what it is today.  In this current age, we have several systems and platforms to choose from.  There are those that are completely open source like Linux.  There are some that are moderately protected like Windows.  And there are some that are extremely restrictive like MacOS.  The choices here are like a spectrum with each manufacturer having certain tolerances to homebrew and emulation.  What is important to remember here though is that more often than not, these sorts of software result from restrictions or limitations placed on the hardware by manufacturers.  These restrictions are usually in place to protect the business however, it is also possible that these restrictions repel people.  With any technology there will be those that seek to maximize the value of the hardware.  People do this because they want to get the "most bang for their buck."  Unnecessary restrictions only serve to reduce the ability for technology to diffuse into the hands of those that potentially may be interested.  With any subject matter, there will always be those that are in the loop.  In this case its, the hackers.  Along with these people, there will always be more people that are unaware.  There will not ever come a time where there are more hackers than there are those that are unaware.

The purpose of the hacker, is to allow the manufacturers to see the potential in their system.  One such example is the emergence of Android.  This cellphone operating system is one of the most open.  It is one of the most successful because of that.  This operating system has created more value in people lives and its evident in such application and games that can be found on the Google Playstore.  I think manufacturers of these products should be keeping up-to-date on the community.  What they should be looking at to determine the health of their business are times or red flags when the ratio of hackers exceed or is close to exceeding the average user in numbers.  This was a major issue with disc based systems in the 90's.  As a matter of fact, the first game console that had this issue was the Play Station One.  And to a worse extent the Play Station Portable.  These people had the biggest communities but Sony managed the community to limit these activities to benefit themselves through, "word of mouth."  Their strategy was solely based on this tactic.

The console that fell as a result of piracy was Sega's Dreamcast.  It was a combination of hacking and the release of the Play Station 2 that caused the demise of this system.  It is important to note that both open and closed systems have their benefits.  It really depends on what type of a system you as the user prefer.  By going to a restrictive system you could be drawn in by the quality of software as is the case with Nintendo products or by design and connectivity as is the case with Apple.  However by choosing an open system you are drawn in by business and enterprise as is the case with Microsoft or by productivity and efficiency as is the case with Google.  Which ever is for you, you'll be glad to know, you have options.

Now as it pertains to homebrew and emulation.  The first apps were actually hackers attempting to maximize the capabilities of early smart phones.  It was these hackers that have helped the manufacturers make these amazing products we each consider a part of ourselves.  Next time someone tries to tell you that this sort of thing is not worth taking a look at, tell them that.
